Susan Sung, PhD

Professor Emerita of Social Welfare, San Francisco State University

Dr. Sung was born in Shanghai, China and migrated to Hong Kong with her parents when she was a toddler, during the change of China’s internal war and turnover of government in 1949.

Susan completed her elementary and high school education in a Catholic missionary school. She started her college education at Dominican College in San Rafael; a year later, she transferred to U.C. Berkeley. She completed all her college and graduate studies at U.C. Berkeley, receiving a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Master’s degree in Social Work, and Doctoral degree of Social Welfare.

During her college years, the upheavals of the Vietnam War, the civil rights movement, the women’s movement, and the third world movement left a lasting commitment to Dr. Sung’s life-long pursuit for social justice and social change.
